Who wants to be the next dog owner to quickly train his new dog to "go toilet" outside the house in 3 simple steps?

By: Len McGrane

When you come home with a new puppy you'll quickly realize that you need to teach him a few things. Probably the thing you'll want to show him first is where he should go for his toilet.

There's not need to feel stressed. It is not difficult! Most dogs can be trained in this with a firm, confident three-step program.

You need to be ahead of the game, so the first thing you need to do is decide where you want him to go to eliminate. Choose a place. A secluded location at the back our your garden could be OK. Somewhere out of sight down the end of your lawn, could work. Under a bush or a tree on the edge of your property. There will be a number of, so choose one. This will be his go-quickly-and-do-it zone. Know this and don't change your mind about it.

Now watch your pup after meals. You will notice that he makes distinctive movements when he feels the urge to eliminate waste. Perhaps he will stop still. He may look at you intently. Often a puppy in this situation will strain his body. There will be signs that he is about to do his business. When you see these signs quickly pick him up and hurry out to that place you have chosen.

Make sure you leave by the same path each time. This way you are teaching him to associate his need to "go" with "outside".

Gently and without rush place your dog down in the training area but don't leave him: him unattended - instead wait until he starts to "go" and right then say a special word of command. Quickly he will link your command with doing his business and in time will only "go" when you use your word. Put some thought in before you choose this word. It should be a word other people won't laugh at. Your dog will be out with you on occasion and want to "use the toilet". If your word of command will cause people to chuckle at the time, you will wish you'd chosen more wisely.

The last thing to do, when he has "gone" in the right place is to reward him. Some people use food for this. Others might use the click of a clicker. But find) something that gives him a message strong and plain that he's fantastic!

Just make these three simple steps and your puppy will quickly learn that the place to do his business is not on your best carpet!
