Who wants to be the next dog owner to train his new dog to "go toilet" outside the house in just 3 easy steps?

By: Len McGrane

There are a number of things you will want to teach your new dog when you bring him home. The critical lesson will be where he should "go".

You can relax on this one. It can be easy! Most dogs can be trained in this with a firm, confident three-step program.

The first thing you need to do is decide where you want him to go to eliminate. Choose a place. A private place at the back our your garden would be ideal. Somewhere private and out of sight down the end of your lawn, perhaps. Under a bush or a tree on the edge of your lot. There will be many possible places, so choose one. This will be his toilet area. Know this and don't change your mind about it.

Now watch your pup after meals. You will notice that he makes distinctive movements when he feels the urge to eliminate waste. Perhaps he will stop still. He may look at you intently. Often a puppy in this situation will strain his body. There will be signs that he is about to do his business. When you see these signs quickly pick him up and hurry out to that place you have chosen.

Something you should do -- each time you carry him out, take him out by the same way. When you do this with getting out of your home -- and certainly from your living room carpet!

When you get to the toilet area stay with your dog and just as he begins to eliminate say a word. The dog will associate that word with doing his business, and soon will only eliminate when you give him permission by saying that word. Choose your word wisely, though. It needs to be a word you can use in a public place. Sometimes when you are out with other people your dog will show signs of wanting to go. He will expect you to say your special word, so make it something unembarrassing.

And when its all done, and he's eliminated, reward him. People reward this with a little food. You may use a clicker. You just want to communicate he's a great dog!

With this easy little program your new dog will quickly know how to "go" in the right place.
