How to show any little puppy to do his business in the right place in 3 easy steps

By: Len McGrane

There are several things you will want to teach your new dog as soon you bring him home. The most important lesson will be where he should "do his business".

There's not need to feel stressed. It is not difficult! Most dogs can be taught this with a firm, confident routine.

Start by deciding exactly where you want him to "do potty". Decide on a location. It might be out in your garden away from people. Or you may choose the end of your lawn area. Under bushes or in an area of small trees would be OK. No doubt there will be several good places you can choose, so select one of them. Designate this, in your own mind, as the place where you want him to "go". Be sure and firm about this.

When you've decided on a place, the thing to do next is observe him after meals. Dogs will make certain, small quivering movements as they are about to "use the facilities". Many young dogs stand still. Looking directly at you is also common. Quite a few young dogs will begin to strain their bodies. All these things are signs something is about to happen. When you see these things calmly but quickly pick up your pet, murmuring peaceful words, and rush out to your chosen place.

Now here's a trick -- each time you carry him out, take him out by the same way. "go" with getting out of the home.

When you get to your special area stay with your dog and just as he begins to "go" say a special word of command. Your dog will associate that command with "going", and soon will only eliminate when you say that word. Choose your word wisely, however. It needs to be a word you can use in places like car parks or parks or streets, where there are people around. Sometimes when you are out with other people your dog will show signs of wanting to "go". He will expect you to say your special word, so make it something that won't get listeners tittering at you.Outside, at your designated area, stay with your pup and as he begins to eliminate, say a word -- give a command. Your pup will learn to join that word with "doing his business" and in time will only do that when you say the word. Select your training signal with care. It will have to be a word you can use in public. There will probably be times when you are out and your dog needs to "go potty". He will be expecting you to say your training word, and if it is not to embarrass you, better make it a reasonable one. When you reach the location you've chosen stay with your pup. Watch until he begins to "go" and then - and here's the key step - say a word to him. Quickly your puppy will associate your word with eliminating and eventually he will only "go" when you give the command. Naturally you will need to choose that word carefully. It has to be a word you can use in public places. There will be times, when you are out with your pup in a park , he will start to strain and obviously want to eliminate. He will expect you to give him your permission, so you will want to have one that will not have onlookers sniggering at you.

Finally, when he has finished, give him something special. It's common to use food. Others use a clicker. But whatever you do, give your pup something that says, "Fantastic! You're a good dog!"

Try this and see that your dog will learn where to do the business.
