Benidorm Tourist Information

By: Gary Marshall

The very mention of the word Benidorm among a group of friends will always bring about a mixed response, they will either love it or hate it! Certainly in the past it was the byword for a duff package holiday destination, but nowadays this is not the case, Benidorm has cleaned up its act as it were.

Literally millions of people from all over northern Europe (and further a field) holiday in Benidorm every year and when you investigate why, the reasons are obvious, it has something for everyone. Certainly, there are still the hotels offering very cheap packages and self catering apartments by the thousand, but there are also luxury five star hotels.

Short breaks have become a major section of the economy as well, with the expanse of ever more leisure time and the boom in budget flights to the nearest airport (El Altet, Alicante). The trend to book flights and hotels personally on the internet has obviously played a large part as well.

During the winter the mild climate in Benidorm and ferocious marketing has seen the hotels kept busy (and help pay for staff wages) during the cold season. In fact many retired people spend months or even the entire winter in hotels there at bargain prices. This has meant that the town keeps alive, even in January and February while many other Mediterranean resorts resemble ghost towns.

The town’s three main golden sand beaches are always kept scrupulously clean and have everything you would expect to find on them from loungers and parasols to pedalos and bars. The water quality also meets the top quality, blue flag standard of the European Union.

For evening entertainment there is a truly huge choice, with shows, cabaret, comedy, dancing and discos, you are certain to find something to suit your own taste. Of course the younger generation flocks there for the cheap booze and the clubbing which starts at midnight and seems to go on through till breakfast time.

For family day time fun, again the choice is enormous and varied, from the Terra Mitica (one of the largest theme parks in Spain, with roller coasters, shows etc), Aqualandia (huge water park with flumes and pools) to the Mundomar Park with its ever popular dolphin displays. There are plenty of smaller attractions, gardens and parks to keep everyone happy and busy.

The cuisine is not just limited to the proverbial "chicken and chips”, but restaurants, cafes and takeaways are found on every corner offering fine dining or an English breakfast for just a few euros, the choice is yours.
