At last you can train your dog not to "go" on your brand new carpet with this 3-step program

By: Len McGrane

There are several things you will want to teach your new dog as soon as you bring him home. The most important lesson will be where he should "go".

There's not need to feel stressed. It can be easy! Most dogs can be trained in this with a firm, confident three-step program.

Start training him by deciding where you want him to "go". You have to pick a spot. The best place would be in a quiet, semi-private part of your garden where he could scratch and rake the earth after he's done. People find the edge of the lawn is OK. In the bushes or trees on your boundary might work, as these are private and usually have bare earth underneath where he can scratch. Plenty of places will spring to min. When you've decided, stick with your decision -- make this his "potty" area. Don't change your mind on the location.

Now watch your pup after meals. You will notice that he makes distinctive movements when he feels the urge to eliminate waste. Perhaps he will stop still. He may look at you intently. Often a puppy in this situation will strain his body. There will be signs that he is about to do his business. When you see these signs quickly pick him up and hurry out to that place you have chosen.

Each time carry him out of the home by the same route. Quickly your dog will associate his need to "go" with leaving the house.

When you get to your special area stay there with your dog then, at the time he begins to eliminate say a special word of command. Your puppy will associate that word with "going", and soon will only eliminate when you say that word. Choose your word wisely, however. You've got to use a word you can use in places like car parks or parks or streets, where there are people around. Sometimes when you are out with other people your dog will show signs of wanting to toilet. He will expect you to use your word or command, so make it something that won't get listeners smiling at you.As you arrive at your designated area, stay with your dog and as he begins to eliminate, say a word -- give a verbal training signal. Your pup will learn to associate that word with "going" and in time will only do that when you say the word. Select your training signal with care. It has to be a word you can use in public. There will probably be times when you are out and your dog needs to "go potty". He will be listening for you to give your training word, so pick one that won't embarrass you at the time. When you reach the location you've chosen stay with your pup. Watch until he begins to "go" and then - and here's the key step - say a word to him. In a short time your new dog will associate your word with doing his business and eventually he will only do that when you give the word. Of course you will need to select that word after some thought. It has to be a word you can use in public places. Sometimes it will happen, when you are out with your dog in a park or on the street, he will start to strain and obviously want to eliminate. He will anticipate you will say your word, so you will want to have one that will not have onlookers joking about you when you've gone.

Finally, the thing to do, when he has "gone" in the right place is to give him a reward. Some people use food for this. Maybe the click of a clicker. But that he's fantastic!

With this easy little program your new dog will quickly know how to do his business in the right place.
